Are BMWs expensive to maintain after they pass 50,000 miles?

My parents are in the market for me a 2008 BMW 535i. One of my dad's friends, a mechanic on American cars, told him they're a nightmare to maintain after they pass 50,000 miles and he wouldn't have one. Is this true, or just a fallacy like I expect it to be?

should i buy an Accord LX with 140,000 miles?
