Function of irony in the Kite Runner?

I know many examples of irony in the novel, such as Amir's encounter with Assef - '‘My body was broken... but I felt healed’ for example.

I can understand the irony behind each example, but I'm not sure why Hosseini has used this dramatic technique as a whole.

Maybe the irony is symbolic of Amir's life?
