How much was ten thousand pounds in the 1800s?

I've been reading some period books, like Emma (Jane Austen) and Oscar and Lucinda, and a major plot point in these books is money, but of course the value of that money is very different from now. I looked it up online and it seems ten thousand pounds was the equivalent of half a million pounds today, but I don't think that describes the actual purchasing power and/or perception of that wealth. It seems like ten thousand was a lot, and thirty thousand was A LOT (Emma has that much), so I was just wondering if there was a general idea of just what kind of wealth it would mean today. It would help me understand these books a little better.
