My new monitor makes everything stretched out?

I have XP, I installed my new acer 23in monitor and now everything is stretched out, looks distorted. When i go to the resolution it does not give me the option to go to 1400x900 it does not go that high. Do i need i new graphics card, or do i just need to download a driver from acer?
