Xbox live/ internet questions, how to improve?

Ok our house has wireless internet. So I play xbox live and with our internet I can only play sometimes, it jumps around one second I can play and then the next it lags like crazy. Should we get a new router or what please tell me somethings to make it better. NOTE. My xbox is not connected to the router wirelessly, like most of you think im talking about.
